Hello and welcome — I’m Susan Labrum, the artist behind Gillyflower Studio. I’m an illustrator and surface pattern designer with over 30 years of experience as a graphic designer and 10 years as a video editor. My work blends charming sophistication with thoughtful craftsmanship, and at the heart of it all is storytelling. I create art that aims to connect, evoke, and enrich — designs that carry meaning and spark a sense of memory or wonder.
My Journey
My creative path began long before I knew it would become a career. In fact, my very first kindergarten report card read: “Susan is a good student, but she draws too much in class.” Even then, I was already pulled toward a world of visual expression — not just drawing, but narrating through images. That instinct never faded.
Over the years, I built a career in graphic design, working across branding, publishing, and digital media. Later, as a video editor, I honed my sense of pacing, emotion, and the impact of visual rhythm. Each step deepened my appreciation for design that communicates clearly and connects deeply.
Launching Gillyflower Studio allowed me to bring all of those experiences together. It’s a place where design isn’t just decorative — it’s intentional. Every motif, every repeat, every palette is crafted with care and a quiet sense of story behind it.
My Philosophy
I believe in the beauty of a patterned life — not just in textiles, but in the rhythms and moments that shape our everyday. My art is often inspired by those moments: a tender memory, a favorite tale, the little things we carry with us. I design for people like me — those who value warmth, meaning, and visual storytelling.
With authenticity and integrity as guiding values, I approach each project with intention and heart. Whether I'm designing for fabric, wallpaper, or illustrated goods, my goal is always the same: to create art that feels personal and well-loved.
